Baldomir-Mayweather Fight Predictions

Live Saturday night from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada (HBO PPV), “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather challenges Carlos “Tata” Baldomir for the welterweight belt he won from Zab Judah in New York. The undefeated Mayweather is the consensus pound-for-pound king whose speed and accuracy are a handful for any fighter. But Baldomir’s not just any fighter. He’s been labeled, pace former heavyweight champ Jim Braddock, the Cinderella Man for his rags to riches tale, but it may be back to rags if the bigger, stronger Baldomir doesn’t impose his will on PBF. Will Mayweather dazzle his way to yet another stupendous victory? Or can Baldomir keep his win streak alive and continue to give underdogs the world over hope? This is how The Sweet Science writers see Baldomir vs. Mayweather.

The oddsmakers keep underestimating Carlos Baldomir, but Floyd Mayweather won’t make that mistake. Floyd will come to the ring in proper physical and mental form, and will utilize his natural speed and solid defense to fight the Argentinean at a distance. Baldomir, a tough, gritty, no-nonsense warrior, will work to close that distance with relentless pressure. He’ll make it close and he’ll make it hard for boxing’s pound-for-pound best, but at the end of twelve tough rounds, Floyd’s hand will be raised as the new and true welterweight champion.
David Berlin

Too fast, too ring smart, too much fighter. Mayweather, who will be comfortable fighting at welterweight, wins by easy decision despite a game and battered Baldomir.
Rick Folstad

Mayweather will win by decision although not as easily as he's used to. Baldomir is a true welterweight with PBF making his way up through the weight classes. With all the hardware on the line (WBC, IBO, IBA) I expect a battle and hope Mayweather emerges 37-0 at the end.
Amy Green

Baldomir caught Zab Judah looking past him, but he won’t have the element of surprise going for him this time. Arturo Gatti? Look what Mayweather did to him. The Argentinean is a tough customer and will probably be around when the final bell rings, but it should be a fairly easy win for Pretty Boy.
George Kimball

Baldomir isn't the best defensively, doesn't move his head much, and is a bit of a plodder with average movement. What he does though is get in your grill and outwork you –against Zab that worked well, and simply being bigger and stronger than Gatti was all it took in that fight. Against Mayweather, though, I feel Baldomir will have too much trouble catching Floyd clean while being countered and slapped around in return fire. Baldomir was never a big hitter but will likely have the edge in pop here as Mayweather has not carried his power up from 135 and 140. Still, it is tough to hit what you can't catch and although I expect Baldomir to have his moments and give Mayweather a test, a wide decision victory for Floyd is in the cards.
Joey Knish

Mayweather has "it." Baldomir doesn't. It would be a huge upset if Baldy could defeat Mayweather and although Baldomir is a helluva fighter, Mayweather is simply too talented. Look for Mayweather to take his time and slowly wear down Baldomir with his speed and combination punching. By round nine Baldomir's face will wear the look of a beaten fighter and while he'll gain even more respect for his courage under fire, Pretty Boy will not be denied. Mayweather via TKO9.
Scott Mallon

On paper Mayweather should destroy Baldomir, but that won't happen. The naturally bigger and stronger Baldomir will be in the fight every step of the way. It won't be pretty, but he should last the distance. Mayweather W 12.
Robert Mladinich

It’s easy to outthink yourself with this matchup and give Baldomir more credit than he has earned. No doubt he is strong and is going to come into this fight better conditioned than he ever has before. We also know history often repeats itself (more than the Rocky series of movies) and there is a reason history repeats itself… because man doesn’t learn from another’s mistake. Take no one for granted. Could there be an upset here? There’s a fleeting chance... Generally the only way an upset happens is when the favored doesn’t do the things he would normally do in training to maintain his advantage over his less talented opposition come fight time. (You could have the advantage of speed but if you get tired by the 4th round, guess what? Your speed becomes negligible.) We know two things for sure… Mayweather is more talented and Baldomir has lost nine times. Heed that warning and the rest will play itself out come Saturday night.
Michael Olajide

The Baldomir story is an incredible journey from rags to riches that nobody wants to see end. Nobody gave him a chance against Judah and there were still doubts about his ability when he fought Gatti (I picked Gatti). Now, you'd be crazy to pick against him considering his eight years without a loss. He's the real deal, the best welterweight in the world, but all great stories reach a pinnacle. I hate to breakup the Cinderella story but Mayweather is just too good right now for anyone. Baldomir handled Judah's speed, but this is no Judah. Mayweather has it all and his speed and accuracy will prove too tall an order. Baldomir will keep coming because he's as tough as they come so the fight should go the distance but look for a one-sided beating with Floyd proving that he's unbeatable, at least right now.
Benn Schulberg

This is the kind of test Mayweather needs, and I think he has the speed of hand and foot to pass it. I do not think he will miss Uncle Roger, but at least we know that should be no fight after the fight.
Ed Schuyler

There will come a time when I will predict Floyd Mayweather to be the loser of an upcoming bout. However, it will not be anytime soon. Mayweather by unanimous decision.
Aaron Tallent

If Baldomir wins he's hands down Fighter of the Year, but unfortunately for Carlos this seems to be the boxing equivalent of if my aunt had juevos she'd be my uncle. Baldomir has plenty of stones himself, but the one casting all the hard rocks is going to be Mayweather, who, if he comes out firing on all cylinders, will put a harsh, ugly stop to Baldomir's underdog dream season.
Phil Woolever

larry:  I have commented on this much anticipated bout several times and I will say again, while I truly want to witness a hard fought back and forth war I just cant see it. If it does go the distance I think that Carlos will be a lumpy mess by the end of twelve. At the end of the day I am rooting for Baldamir, yet, if folks think that Floyd is going to come in sloppy, out of shape or in anything less than top notch condition they are insane; Mayweather's extreme confidence and touch of conciet would not allow him to come into the ring on such a huge stage and look bad...that element is personal and will always be in place no matter who the opponent may be. It will be a long crushing night for Baldomir...

rudy:  Mayweather loses!!! Count on it, Baldomir wins and becomes FOY and better yet brings some mainstream attention to the sport. Mayweather is an excellent fighter, but as shown against JL Castillo in the 1st fight, you smother him and his punches - you will land shots on that good defense he has. Everyone thinks that Floyd's victory over Corrales was huge, but when you look at that fight, Corrales has always had trouble against boxers that stick and move and thats exactly what happened, he got outboxed, Corrales needs someone to exchange with him - Styles make fights and that was a complete mismatch. This is clash of styles a puncher who likes to keep the pressure on and a flashy boxer, and I think the work rate, size, and strenght of Carlos Baldomir will prove too much for Floyd Jr. and show the world he is the Welterweight Champ no one believes he is.

Alex Stone:  Baldomir is without doubt one of the toughest fighters I have seen in a long time. Floyd is one of the most talented fighters I have seen in my era, and possibly a couple of fights down the line, I may place him among my list of all time greats. Judah was a moron and clearly undertrained for Baldy, and all Gatti had to do was use his speed and box the snail like Baldomir, instead he decided to be Gatti, the quenticential Italian, and brawl it out. Mayweather won\'t be that stupid, he will easily out box, not to mention out think, the tough, worthy champion. Excuse me as I call my bookie, Mayweather by UD.
Friday Nov 3, 2006
rudy:  why bet the favorite, when Baldomir is at 5-1 and has a way better chance of beating him than those odds reflect...Baldomir!
Friday Nov 3, 2006
William A Major:  for the 3rd time this week, carlos baldomir will be the Champ when its over, floyd just dosent push hard enough, always holding back and with this guy you cant do that.moving your shoulders around to avoid shots wont work with this cat..
Friday Nov 3, 2006
Stephan Chapa:  Tick Tock Tick Tock, time is running out for the Pretty Boy, he is acting like Baldomir won't be able to take his punches, he acts like Baldomir can;t win well guess what, Baldomir can win and he will prevail. But I still think that he will have to go through hell, it will be pain. People don't look at how Judah is very much like Mayweather, they both use the shoulder role defense, both have very fast hands and legs, both use right or left hand leads, etc. Floyd can hit Baldy all he wants, he will keep marching forward, cutting off the ring and going to the body, sooner or later, just like Gatti and Judah the presure will take its toll, and then thats when Baldomir will win. Floyd is not Invincible, he is a man, and all men have weaknesses, emotions, and have faults and on the 4th everybody will see why. Baldomir by KO in the 12th
Friday Nov 3, 2006
Ricky Martinez:  I feel it will be a close fight mostly consisting of Baldomir coming straight in at Mayweather. Mayweather may have the quicker of hands, and if he's letting Baldy back peddle him Baldy might have some good shots. I don't believe Mayweather will try what he has done in the past and tried to stand toe to toe and then retreat while still connecting. I dont think this will happen. What will happen is Baldomir coming straight through, while getting hit, as long as he puts his glove out there. There will be no Quiting in Baldy. He has come to far for his dream to end. Like Benn Schulbeg, news column reads , "NO MORE FEATHER DUSTERS" By the end of tomorrow night, I guarantee i will be drunk, i will be $50 dollars richer, because the WELTER WEIGHT CHAMP WILL .....STILL BE THE ARGENTIAN CARLOS "TATA" BALDOMIR.
Friday Nov 3, 2006
Dontae:  I see a repeat of Hopkins vs. Tarver, in which the smaller better skilled boxer wins. Mayweather will make Baldomir appear to be very slow and old. Everyone mentions Carlos' victories over Judah and Gatti which is simply foolish to me. Judah has no discipline and Gatti is an open target. At the end of the night Carlos' gives a valiant effort however Floyd will remain undefeated.
Friday Nov 3, 2006
Gage Scott:  Its a hard call to make, seeing as mayeather is a very skilled fighter but doenst handle pressure well, Baldomir on the other hand isnt as skilled but is by far stronger and tougher than Mayweather, this fight could either be a boring marathon for Mayweather in which he sticks and moves throughout the fight en route to a victory, or could turn into an ugly brawl where Mayweathers punches are smotherd and cant handle Baldomirs strength, granted baldomir isnt the biggest puncher in the world, but there is no knocking him out and he is a true welterweight. This fight is up in the air folks, will Mayweather be outmuscled, or will he use his superior speed, footwork, defense and overall skills to dominate.
Friday Nov 3, 2006
Joe Greene:  Unknown Argentines have a habit of winning big fights against the odds, and I think Baldomir has the capabilty of continiuing this trend, but only if Mayweather is well below par, which is not inconceivable. However, I think it's time for Floyd to show us what he can really do, I think he might go all out to knock Baldomir out in the later rounds, thus, he'll either end up a Hall of Famer, or another Donald Curry.
Friday Nov 3, 2006
Ryan:  Baldomir!! Too strong, too big for Floyd. Mark my words, Baldomir will make history on Nov. 4, making probably the biggest upset since Douglas vs. Tyson. Baldomir TKO 11.
Friday Nov 3, 2006
chrisL:  Anyone who thinks Baldomir is "too strong" for Floyd might be punch drunk themselves. Gatti's punch has destroyed a number of people in one clean shot, but we all saw what happened to him. You make one mistake against Mayweather, you get hit 6 times. Floyd is entirely too smart and has great ring generalship. I believe he's gotten past the laying on the ropes and letting people take shots at him like he used to. This is not Duran vs Leonard 1 we're talking about here... This probably won't be close, and might end in a knockout. You could chop down a sequoia with a swiss army knife if you cut for long enough, and there's only so many times you can be punched on your body before collapsing. Baldomir will learn that tomorrow
Friday Nov 3, 2006
chrisL:  By the way, you guys are forgetting that Baldomir only has 13 knockouts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Baldomir did beat judah, but didn't knock him out, and he doesn't have the best chin in the world either. Floyd is at least twice as talented as Judah, and 4 times as talented as Gatti. He won't beat Floyd, you're crazy
Friday Nov 3, 2006
Jay:  Thing is, Mayweather is much more of a SKILLED FIGHTER. I appreciate a journey man like TATA but all around skills will prevail. The point system is going to hurt TATA cause he likes to point at his chin and when he does it will get hit alot.Bottom line, it will be a great fight and Pretty Boy will WIN.
Friday Nov 3, 2006
chan:  Mayweather's foot and hand speed will be too much for Baldi. Baldi is no JLC, and even JLC lost to PBF. The only reason why the JLC fight was competitive was because of the hand injury PBF suffered. PBF put on a boxing clinic in thier rematch. The only way I can see Baldi having the same success as JLC is if PBF breaks his hands on Baldi's head. PBF will be landing straight rights all day. Maywaether by 10th round TKO.

mendoza the jew:  the only reason baldomir is a WW is because his skull weighs 50 pounds. he aint that big, hes gona get sliced and cut up, a 12 round blowout win for floyd
Saturday Nov 4, 2006
Jay:  It's mindboggling that anybody gives Baldomir any chance at all. Not a great knockout record, strong and tough but what good is that going to do? He'll never even touch Floyd. It won't be a great fight, or even a good fight. Nobody could touch Roy Jones and he didn't have anything near the complete package that Floyd has. It's SPEED boys and girls! And Baldomir will pay for every move he makes and punch he throws. He'll be pounded on all night long. I'd be amazed if he finishes the fight! Floyd's connect percentage will be 60%!! If anybody thinks otherwise they don't know the first thing about boxing. Maybe they're just young and don't remember Randall "Tex" Cobb who beat on Larry Holmes fist with his head all night and whose greatest accomplichment was to get Howard Cosell to shut up (and that was something!!) and quit doing boxing commentary. There is no way on earth that Baldomir ever even gets in the fight. Mayweather is smart as they get, and perhaps the greatest all-round fighter in the past decade. He trains hard, he knows what to do, he's able to make adjustments. He's like Ray Leonard and Aaaron Pryor in one package. He can't be hit if he doesn't want to. His hand speed is phenomenal, he punches from all angles (Pryor), he punches while he turns away from punches, he punches going forward, he punches going backwards. I have never seen a fighter who defense and offense were so good at the very same time . He's better at that than James Toney, so what does anything think a few pounds gives Baldomir?. Mayweather shames Carlos Baldomir.

wayne:  Mayweather Jr. easily defeats Baldomir. By UD. Mayweather Jr. is just too good.

Pasky:  The way this fight turns out depends on how energetic Baldomir is tonight. If he can put constant pressure, and I mean constant pressure on Floyd from start to finish, Floyd will have lots of trouble down the stretch to continue avoiding Baldomir while landing effectively. Baldy needs to push Mayweather and somewhat wrestle him backwards when they clinch. He needs to tire him by leaning on him all night long when they clinch. He needs to throw twice the amount of punches that Mayweather will. Don't let Mayweather have time to even think in there ! He needs to keep Pretty Boy on the defence all night long ! If he can do that.....he just might stun all of us once again in the fight of the year and most importantly the UPSET OF THE DECADE !

phillip:  For everyone that thinks this is a gatti vs mayweather fight. Just realize that Baldomir is so much smarter than gatti in the ring. He isn't just a brawler. He does use timing in his offense. Intimidation is another factor. Gatti was intimidated and one dimentional. Baldomir doesn't seem the least bit worried and is a more complex fighter than gatti.

Julian:  Were all acting like we have never seen a 5-1 underdog win I dont know who will win but I give Baldomir a chance to win a good chance sometimes you can only climb up in weight soo much then you meet a fighter thats just too big maybe doesnt have all talent but he has too much mass to move around

No Love For The Modern Glove
Fight fans who are of the opinion that modern boxers could have held their own against guys from earlier eras always seem to ignore the fact that boxers back in the day were more durable than modern ones and had to be because of the different conditions under which they fought. For one thing, the lighter, non-water-resistant, horsehair gloves used in earlier eras required one to have stronger hand bones than the heavier, foam-padded, water resistant gloves used today, so any modern fighter who suffers chronic hand injuries would never have lasted very long in bouts fought in earlier eras (unless, of course, they took a little off of every punch that they threw, which, of course, would have made them much less effective fighters). ---TSS reader Feed The Cat offers some perspective on the Old vs. New debate
