What Counts Boxing remains the sport of the unexpected, where up is down, in is out, good is bad, black is white, all things being never quite equal. The latest boxing imbroglio, hot on the heels of the recent Mayweather-Judah mini-riot, concerns Jose Luis Castillo’s inability to make the 135 lb. lightweight limit for his rubber match with Diego Corrales. Castillo came in five lbs. overweight, a lot of extra baggage at that scale, and deep-sixed the fight and besmirched the sport in the process. But boxing has seen worse and will no doubt see worse again, yet the lynch mob demands that justice must be done. The money lost, the fans disappointed, the hearts broken, has to count for something, so what is the proper punishment for Jose Luis Castillo? |
