What Counts
Few fighters have given us as many thrills, spills and chills in recent years as Arturo “Thunder” Gatti, but the New Jersey resident by way of Canada got yet another major league thumping Saturday night, this time at the hands of welterweight champ Carlos Baldomir in Atlantic City. Talk of Gatti possibly, finally, maybe, hopefully retiring is in the air, but this is nothing new and follows in the wake of each and every decisive Gatti loss. And while he’s been rightfully celebrated as a throwback, an old school warrior in the Jerry Quarry mold, ultimately – and time will tell, as it always does – Gatti has perhaps served boxing better than he has served himself. If you were advising Arturo Gatti and had no vested interest (Main Events, HBO) in his career proceeding or ending at once, what would you suggest he do?
