What Counts Judging fights is subjective, even without outside interference, so it must be especially hard to judge a fight of major importance with the world looking over your shoulder. On top of that, some people love a boxer, others are a sucker for a slugger, and allow their tastes to determine who won a round or won a fight, rather than allowing the accuracy of punches thrown, the number of punches landed, and intangibles like ring generalship to affect their decision. The judges for Saturday’s WBC heavyweight eliminator scored it 115-112 Toney and 116-111 Peter twice, giving Sam Peter the victory and a shot at newly crowned Oleg Maskaev for the WBC heavyweight title. But when a defiant James Toney said at the end of the bout, “I won that fight. Everyone in the world and the arena knows I won the fight,” many people agreed. What about you? Do you think Samuel Peter beat James Toney? |

No Love For The Modern Glove
Fight fans who are of the opinion that modern boxers could have held their own against guys from earlier eras always seem to ignore the fact that boxers back in the day were more durable than modern ones and had to be because of the different conditions under which they fought. For one thing, the lighter, non-water-resistant, horsehair gloves used in earlier eras required one to have stronger hand bones than the heavier, foam-padded, water resistant gloves used today, so any modern fighter who suffers chronic hand injuries would never have lasted very long in bouts fought in earlier eras (unless, of course, they took a little off of every punch that they threw, which, of course, would have made them much less effective fighters). ---TSS reader Feed The Cat offers some perspective on the Old vs. New debate
